Waves of Freedom: Haines Independence Day Festivities

On the Fourth of July, Haines, Alaska, will come alive with the spirit of celebration and community. This year's theme, "Waves of Freedom," pays tribute to our town's breathtaking coastal beauty and the majestic glacial fjords that surround us. Join us as we honor our nation's independence with a series of exciting events that showcase the heart and soul of our beloved town.

Early Morning Patriotism

Start your day with a sense of pride and patriotism at the Raising of the Flag Ceremony at Historic Fort William Seward Parade Grounds. At 7:00 AM, community members will gather to honor our flag and reflect on the freedoms we cherish.

From 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the American Legion Breakfast will be serving up delicious morning fare to fuel your festivities. Enjoy a hearty meal while catching up with friends and neighbors.

For the early birds and fitness enthusiasts, the Ripinski Run kicks off at 8:00 AM. This invigorating run is a great way to start the day with some fresh air and exercise.

Mid-Morning Merriment

At 11:00 AM, the heart of our Independence Day celebration begins with the Main Street Fourth of July Parade. Signaled by a cannon blast, the parade will make its way through town from Fort Seward. Kids are encouraged to decorate their bikes and join the procession – just be sure to arrive before 10:30 AM to secure your spot. Parade entries should be registered in advance at haineschamber.org. Our special Independence Day panel will be judging entries and awarding prizes, so get creative!

Family Fun and Festivities

From 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, head over to Tlingit Park for the Picnic Party. This is the perfect opportunity to relax with family and friends while enjoying races, picnics, pies, and a variety of competitions. Don’t miss the Slow Bike Race hosted by Sockeye Cycle at 11:30 AM – bring your bike and see if you can be the slowest cyclist around!

Throughout the Picnic Party, enjoy treats from the Friends of the Library Fundraising BBQ and the Women’s Club Bake Sale. The Haines Visitor Center team will be handing out complimentary watermelon, and the Haines Friends of Recycling will have a zero waste station to keep our celebration green.

Afternoon Excitement

At 1:30 PM, join in the Foot Races hosted by TONGASS Credit Union. This year, the coin toss is bigger than ever, and the prizes are awesome! Compete for fun and rewards in these spirited races.

The excitement continues at 4:00 PM with the much-anticipated Mad Raft 2024 at the Chilkoot River. This beloved event has been a Haines tradition for over 60 years. Gather your materials and construct a homemade raft and life vest to join the fun. To participate, sign up by calling 907-766-2202. Sponsored by RAW TV, this year's event promises thrills and spills on the water.

Evening Celebrations

As the day turns to evening, head over to the Senior Center for Big Time Bingo from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Enjoy an evening of games and camaraderie with the community.

At 7:00 PM, bring your picnic blankets and gather at Historic Fort Seward Parade Grounds for a Music & Picnic Gathering. Savor the extended daylight with music and good company.
