 chilkat bald eagle preserve
Established in 1982, this Alaska State Preserve is a haven for one of the world’s largest Bald Eagle populations and their vital habitat. Spanning 48,000 acres along the Chilkat, Kleheni, and Tsirku Rivers, the preserve is committed to protecting the natural environment, which includes crucial salmon runs that support not only
eagles but also five species of salmon spawning from summer through early winter. The river “flats” of the Chilkat River along the Haines Highway between miles 18 and 21 are the main viewing area for wildlife seekers. Eagles are particularly drawn to this area by the availability of salmon and open waters in late fall and winter, offering spectacular viewing opportunities.
