In Haines, wildlife is truly “WILD,” and it can be found
just about anywhere, including downtown. Drive along Lutak Road to access Chilkoot State Park, a popular spot for bear viewing and fishing. On Mud Bay Road, you’ll discover Chilkat State Park, renowned for hiking, fishing, and glacier viewing.
As you venture out on the Haines Highway, you’ll enter the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, a sprawling 48,000-acre habitat known for its eagle population, particularly during the fall and early winter.
Guided tours are available, offering expert knowledge
and access to remote wildlife- rich areas. Don’t forget your binoculars for close encounters with critters big and small.
In town, the American Bald Eagle Foundation and on the highway, Kroschel’s Wildlife Center offer captivating live bird presentations and educational experiences with native wildlife.
