If you ever find yourself in Haines, Alaska, and you're searching for an experience that combines exhilarating adventure with breathtaking serenity, let me share a little secret: the Takshanuk Mountain Trail is where your dreams of the Alaskan wilderness come alive.
Our adventure began at the trailhead, where we were warmly greeted by Angie, our guide for the day. Angie’s knowledge of the valley was unparalleled; she effortlessly shared insights about the region’s history and natural wonders, tailoring the experience to each guest's interests and ensuring that every moment of the journey was both informative and memorable. After a brief but thorough introduction to the Kawasaki Mules—our trusty ATVs for the day—we set off on what would become an unforgettable exploration.
The trail starts with an immediate incline, setting the stage for the day’s excitement. Navigating the 17 switchbacks, we climbed from sea level to 1,100 feet. The forest was dense, but every so often, we’d catch glimpses of the stunning scenery. One of my favorite moments was stopping by a creek where Angie pointed out bear tracks in the drying mud—a tangible reminder of the wildlife that thrives in this pristine environment.
Reaching the lodge felt like discovering a hidden gem. The panoramic views of Lynn Canal and the Coastal Mountain Range were simply mesmerizing. Here, we savored freshly baked cookies and a hot cup of coffee—a welcomed treat since I hadn’t had my morning brew yet. A simple pleasure, made even sweeter by the stunning backdrop. Meeting Dick, our local cook, and sampling wild strawberries as we chatted added a personal touch to our visit.
As we continued our journey, the trail revealed its many facets: cascading waterfalls sparkling in the sunlight, a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by wild Alaskan blueberries and salmonberries, and the trail's end, offering a commanding view of Chilkoot Lake and Lutak Inlet. Standing at 1,500 feet in an alpine meadow that felt like something out of a storybook—with wildflowers swaying in the breeze and a babbling creek inviting us to dip our toes—it was impossible not to be swept up in the serenity of the place.
The meadow was declared a “frolicking-worthy field” by the enthusiastic young ladies on our tour, who eagerly set out to explore. I, too, felt drawn to the natural beauty, following a game trail with my eyes, examining old moose and bear tracks, and immersing myself in the peaceful surroundings. Moments like these, where nature's wonders surround you, made the adventure truly unforgettable.
After our descent, we returned to the lodge for a hearty meal of beer-battered halibut, roasted chicken, and other delicious local fare. With our bellies full and our spirits high, we made our way back to the trailhead, but not before a final photo op at a sunlit bridge—a perfect end to a perfect day.
The Takshanuk Mountain Trail isn’t just a tour; it’s an opportunity to connect with Alaska’s wild heart, experience its rugged beauty, and create memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural splendor with a touch of local charm, this is it. Come and see Haines in a way that only the Takshanuk Mountain Trail can offer—where every turn is a new discovery, and every view is a masterpiece.
