Why Haines Brewing Co. Inc is an Alaska Craft Beer Must Visit

Haines Brewing Co. is the community-hub for craft beer in Haines, Alaska. Since 1999, Paul Wheeler has been serving high quality craft beer to locals and visitors. Whether you have lived in Haines your whole life, or you are stopping by on a cruise – the brewery is a must-visit for craft (and root) beer lovers!

Humble Beginnings

Before HBC was notable enough to be featured in Vogue Magazine, Paul started taking a stab at home brewing. His beer quickly became a favorite among friends and family. So, in 1999 Paul was confident enough to take his skills to the next level and open the first brewery in Haines, Alaska. Originally housed in a small storefront on the SE Alaska State Fairgrounds, HBC was an intimate space to enjoy beer and local company. Now the brewery can be found in a brand-new facility on Main St., with natural lighting and breathtaking views – making extra room for more locals and visitors to enjoy a beer together.

Favorite Brews

After exploring breathtaking wildlife and unrivaled scenery in Haines, wash it down with a cold one! There is no filtering or pasteurizing any of these tasty brews. Some favorites include Captain Cook’s Spruce Tip Ale (5.2% ABV, 25 IBU) which is made with young, local spruce tree tips. Also, there’s Black Fang (8.2% ABV, 40 IBU) – an imperial stout which is an ode to the Disney movie, White Fang, filmed in and around Haines.  Alcohol-free adventures can also be had at the brewery which serves homemade root beer!

Pride in filling only Haines Brewing Co. growlers:  All beer leaving the brewery is in HBC’s own reusable growlers that have been cleaned, sanitized, and inspected, to ensure that your beer will maintain its high quality. After you’ve emptied and rinsed your growler, you can keep it as a souvenir, or the brewery will return your deposit money.  Otherwise, when you return for a refill you can exchange your used growler for another one that’s been through the whole cleaning process.  Also, new in 2018 is the crowler, a 32 oz aluminum can, freshly poured with the beer of your choice.  Perfect for taking with you no matter what your adventure!

Tasters:  From a Charles Dickens’ novel:  “Did you ever taste beer?  I had a sip of it once, said the small servant.  Here’s a state of things! Cried Mr. Swiveller, raising his eyes to the ceiling.  She never tasted it – it can’t be tasted in a sip!”  HBC offers beer on premise in 5 oz or 12 oz glasses.  Specialty brews are sold in 8 oz snifter glasses.  Be sure to grab one of their cards, “It Takes More Than a Sip” which explains how to truly savor beer flavors.

Cash Only:  Make sure to come prepared with cash, or to use the ATM located by the door.

Cell phones:  HBC kindly asks you to refrain from talking on your cell phones while inside the building, and encourages you to instead, - spend your time enjoying the beer, scenery, and people around you.

Best Beer Garden Ever

The beer garden at HBC provides a breathtaking view of the glacier terrain of Haines. This is a great way to experience the great outdoors when you are not biking, kayaking or enjoying wildlife in Haines.

Paul claims to have no interest in becoming a national or even regional brewery. So, if you want to try his beers, you will have to plan a trip to Haines, Alaska! Haines Brewing Co. brews are also on tap locally at most bars and restaurants.
