Everyone Should Experience This Fresh Salmon BBQ in Haines, Alaska

The Annual Lynn Canal Gillnetters Fishermen’s Community Salmon Barbecue happens every June in Haines, Alaska. This event is within walking distance of the finish line of the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay (KCIBR) and is a salmon-lover’s dream! Here’s why everyone should experience this salmon-centric tradition in Haines, Alaska!

The 2018 event will take place on June 16 from 4-9 pm.

Taste the most mouth-watering fresh Sockeye Salmon.

Delicious, freshly-caught, Alaskan sockeye salmon is the main focus of this annual event. All of the salmon is generously donated by local seafood companies. The succulent salmon is then expertly prepared by Haines Packing and Big Al’s Salmon Shack. Not only will you eat fresh salmon, but also enjoy potatoes, beans, salad, and cake prepared by State Fair Grounds.

Welcome the riders.

Just before the event, KCIBR will end within walking distance of the barbecue.  The 25th Annual Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay features over 1200 riders, who you can welcome after their 148-mile journey down the Haines Highway from Haines Junction, YT to Haines, AK. The race is another beloved annual tradition that takes riders through mountains, valleys, and spectacular ocean views. What better way to cross the finish line than with fresh BBQ’d salmon?

Have fun for all ages.

The Annual Lynn Canal Gillnetters Fishermen’s Community Salmon Barbecue takes place on the Alaska State Fair Grounds. (Fun fact: This was a filming location for the Disney movie, White Fang.) Over 2,000 people attend this event to dish on tasty salmon and enjoy live music. Also take in the beautiful scenery of Haines during the event (which is hard to avoid)!

Top it all off with an ice-cold brew.

Celebrate the KCIBR bikers by clinking glasses of beer together! Enjoy some locally brewed classics from Haines Brewing Co. Just be sure to consume alcohol in designated areas.

Enjoy it all for $5!

This part seems too good to be true. However, this community-centric event is donation based! Event organizers recommend a minimum donation of $5 to help cover the costs. Consider donating even more to keep this event fun and affordable for years to come! The Fishermen’s Barbecue wants to “bring attention to the importance of Wild Alaskan Salmon to Southeast Alaskan lifestyle and local economies–and, of course, dinner tables!” Find more information on the event here.
